Zodiac Astrology Elements Explained
The 12 signs of zodiac astrology are broken down into four essential elements of fire, earth, air, and water with each bearing an influence on personality traits.
The existence of these four elements as being vital to life, goes all the way back to an ancient Greek philosopher Empedocles, with the basic idea being that all things consist of one or more of these elements in varying proportions.
The elements play an important part in astrology horoscopes, as in your own birth chart, the mix of elements reveals your cosmic blueprint. Indeed, once you know your elemental sign you will know your basic nature.
It is also important in love astrology for identifying compatibility.
There are three signs associated with each of the four elements:
- Fire: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius
- Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
- Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
- Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Each of these four elements has characteristics independent to each that the twelve astrology signs are based upon. So the element your astrology sign lies under greatly influences your personality traits or temperament as each represents certain basic traits and characteristics summarised below:
They have a strong driving life force for life and those with a strong emphasis of the fire element can flare up when stimulated and are spontaneous, passionate and impulsive. They like to live life enthusiastically take risks and dislike the mundane.
They are quick to respond, have a lively imagination and strong gut instinct but may not be aware of the emotional impact of their actions.
This person is quick and animated, with energy applied in very diverse ways. They tend to use their minds to make sense of their feelings and expectations and base much of their life on principles.
They are social people and are often forward thinkers with a strong curiosity but can struggle when life is out of balance.
People with a strongly emphasized water element have special sensitivity. They understand relationships, knowing when to show warmth and when to hold back. Their imaginative and emotional lives are deep and rich and are able to offer compassion and feel pain. Sometimes they can be prone to be too open to emotions.
Those with an emphasis on earth are practical, realistic and material. They like to compare things carefully, with decisions based on experience, and play safe. They like routine and react quietly and slowly and apply themselves resolutely with endurance. Emotionally they are deeply rooted and slow to change.
Astrologers will consider the element of each of the planets when determining which of the elements may be more significant in a horoscope.
